Stay safe! Wear a mask!

When I was a child I poked around through my parents’ stuff. Somewhere, buried deep behind hammers, wrenches, stuff my father had to fix things, I found this gigantic mask. Never seen anything like it! It was scary. Scary but also intriguing. I’ve seen a similar mask recently in ‘Doctor Who’, some episode that took place in WWII, so this mask my father hid away was some kind of army surplus gas mask that looked just like the one in ‘Doctor Who’. It was issued to him, and other people, at the factory where he worked. I asked my father: “What is this for?” And my father said: “Oh, nothing. Go play with your toys, that’s not for you.” “Who is it for?” “Nobody. We’ll never need it.” “But what if we do?” “We won’t.”

My father’s answers made me very suspicious. He was hiding something. I knew it. That mask was for that eventuality when something bad would happen and we would need a mask to live. What I also wanted to ask my father but I didn’t, was: why was there only one mask in the house when we were a family of four? That mask would save only one of us. The other three would have to die. I had no doubt my parents would want to save me and my sister, so they would give the mask to us. And then my sister and I would split it between us? That wouldn’t work. It was obvious what I’ d have to do. I’d have to give the mask to my little sister, because I loved her to death even though she was a pest. And she’d live on.

Well, life is so ironic. Now we live in a time where everyone should be wearing masks. It is the responsible thing to do. And I’m happy my dad doesn’t have to sacrifice himself for me and I don’t have to sacrifice myself for my sister, lol, because there are plenty of masks for everyone. So I wear a mask because my dad is terrified of the virus and he doesn’t want to die from it, and I want to help him. He, and mom, and sis, live far away from me so I can’t help save their lives directly, but I wear a mask because that helps save the life of someone else’s dad, mom, grandparents. And I hope that where my parents are, someone is wearing a mask to save my 70 year-old dad’s life.

Stay safe, everyone! Wear a mask!

See you,

Misty
